Director of a hospital
Yasuki Kihara
As Kobe City 's core general hospital, our hospital provides advanced and comprehensive medical care, dedicated to protecting the lives and health of local residents. Based on our 100-year history since our establishment in 1923, and with the generous support of Kobe City, we are striving every day to achieve even higher standards of medical care.
1.
Providing emergency medical care
Our hospital's emergency medical center is open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, and is worthy of being called the last stronghold Kobe City as it strives to provide accurate and unfailing medical care. The emergency department is not just a place to provide first aid, but is characterized by the fact that it has built a system in which related medical departments work together to provide advanced medical care and develop regional collaboration aimed at fundamental treatment. Indicating its achievements, the hospital has been ranked number one in the nation for 10 consecutive years in ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare notation and Welfare's Emergency Medical Center Evaluation (2014-2023).
2.
Provision of advanced medical care
The purpose of advanced medical care is to reduce the burden on the patient's body and ensure safety. For that purpose, not only cutting-edge medical equipment but also high technical skills backed by abundant cases and teamwork among medical professionals are required. At our hospital, minimally invasive treatments for urological, gynecological, digestive, and respiratory diseases are being developed at the Robotic Surgery Center, which has two surgical support robots "Da Vinci", and the indications are expanding day by day. . In the hybrid operating room, TAVI (transluminal aortic valvuloplasty), MitraClip (mitral valvuloplasty), WATCHMAN (left atrial appendage closure), and emergency catheterization for hemorrhagic stroke are performed using intravascular catheter procedures. It is carried out day and night and leads the region in its mass. Skilled Cardiovascular Surgery perform coronary artery stenosis bypass surgery and mitral valve repair from minor surgical incisions. Our hospital was ranked among the world's top 250 hospitals in the World's Best Specialized Hospital 2022 published by the New York Times (March 11, 2022 issue). Providing medical care in new areas is also essential. In April 2021, we launched the Department of Rheumatology and Collagen Diseases, and started actively introducing drug therapy in the same area, which is making remarkable progress. At the same time, we opened a Comprehensive Ear and Hearing Center for the first time in Japan, and have begun to take on the challenge of medical treatment for pediatric deafness, which is an educational and social problem, by implanting cochlear implants.
3.
Providing integrated cancer care
Cancer is a major threat to public health and livelihoods. Since it is mainly middle-aged and elderly, it is not uncommon for patients to experience multiple cancers or comorbidities with other chronic diseases. A complex and integrated treatment system is required according to the patient's individual pathology and intentions. Our hospital integrates conventional surgical treatment, chemotherapy, radiation therapy, and palliative care, and is promoting the establishment of a system that can provide the most suitable cancer treatment for each individual. We will also promote cooperation with regional medical institutions, centered on the Patient Support Center, and provide highly satisfying medical care, with a view to responding to emergencies and maintaining at-home life. Our hospital is a regional cancer treatment cooperation base hospital, and we operate a cancer gene panel test diagnosis. In the department of hematology, the biomedical agent Kymriah (CAR-T therapy) was introduced in 2021, and related therapies are being developed sequentially. Nikkei-The Japan Times (August 31, 2021) Ranked No. 1 among medical institutions in the Kansai region for long-term prognosis results in the "Lung Cancer" hospital survey.
4.
Coping with disasters and providing health and safety to communities
Our hospital has been designated as a disaster base hospital, and we have formulated a BCP based on the lessons learned from the Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake, and have prepared a system and countermeasures for emergencies. Although today's COVID-19 pandemic can be considered a disaster, our hospital has been providing accommodation and intensive care for severely ill patients since March 2020 as a designated Type 1 and Type 2 infectious disease hospital. In November 2020, we opened a temporary ward for severely infected patients with 36 beds ahead of other medical institutions in Japan, and as of April 2022, we have treated more than 1,300 patients. The staff of our clinic are proud to have protected the area from the medical collapse due to the new corona virus infection. Our hospital operates 6 MFICU beds, 11 NICU beds, and 12 GICU beds as a comprehensive perinatal maternal and child medical center. In addition, we operate 8 MPU beds for psychiatric physical complications.
5.
Creation of new medical knowledge and development and provision of human resources
In medicine, new knowledge is born every day, and a dynamism is at work that overturns conventional theories, which is the driving force behind the advancement of medicine. Being inspired by this dynamism is a great joy for medical professionals, and at the same time, it is an important factor in attracting talented young people to medicine. Our hospital has its own Clinical Research and Innovation, and takes the lead in conducting numerous clinical trials and clinical research with the understanding and consent of patients. The dissemination of information and creation of intellectual property from our hospital through these academic activities plays a part in the Kobe Medical Industry City initiative. The enhancement of clinical research activities, combined with the postgraduate training system established mainly by the Education Department and Clinical Training Center, has attracted many excellent clinical trainees. Our hospital is proud of the fact that we are able to cultivate human resources who will play a central role in future medicine, and no other medical institution can match it.
